The Smile by Gillian Leaver

He stole into my dreams
One night
I saw his face
And he saw mine

I knew his form
From photographs
That curl and crack
In yellowed box

Half of me
But never known
He left
Before I came to be

We almost met,
So close in time,
But fate decided
Otherwise

Oh how I wished
I had a dad
Like all the kids
When I was small

Too soon, the dream
Began to fade
No plea
Could make him stay awhile

And when I woke
I saved the dream
In memory
To keep it safe

To treasure that vibrant smile
My siblings saw
The camera saw,
For now he’s smiled at me.
