The Spirit Room by David Bateman

This is the room
where they talk with the dead
You creep in
as if the walls, the curtains,
the yellowed lamp might hear you.
An upside-down glass
sits on the table,
surrounded by the alphabet,
by Yes and No.
Leaning against the table,
you reach out, rest your fingertips
on the glass’s base.
You wait, not quite trembling,
almost hoping for nothing.
The glass begins moving.
