Insomnia by Sally James

It is early morning and my dream time

has surrendered to the sleepless dark.

My eyes will not close and thoughts

uncontrolled prance around my head.

I had slept for three dreamless hours

till life’s nightmares prodded me awake

and the sly moon winked at me

in her melancholy mocking way.

It will do you no good

a random thought interrupted

to fret over someone else’s actions

your scars will reopen

if you worry too much

let it be you know you must

you have done no wrong

cannot carry another’s guilt.

Therefore I write till my bed beckons

and dawn cracks open a new day.
