Wild Strawberries by Rob Elsby

Wild strawberries by the cliff path
salted and seasoned by sea air.
Secret fruit of our summers

Laid on your palm while you were sleeping
intimate eye-opening strawberries
wild piquant glittering like garnets.

Eat them now, garnets that fade
are bad omens I have heard.

Wild strawberries this summer, sweet
sun warmed vibrant pressed to your still
lips the colour of garnets, fading.
