Pit Talk by Sally James

You couldn’t talk about green

they only saw blackness

and different shades of grey.

Their mountains were slag heaps.

Dusty roads their meadows.

Sometimes if they were lucky

they would see a blade of grass

cutting through cobbles.

You couldn’t talk about green

they rarely saw it.
