Contemplate Your Mortality – Rebecca Shivji
What do you see
when you look at me,
all one hundred of me,
staring out to the sea -
multiple casts of Antony Gormley?
Nakedness depicted? Or,
arty expense unnecessary?
Do you notice the undulating waves,
the squawking seagulls up high,
the lightly salted haze,
the seaweed scents in the sky…
the sun’s warming rays?
If you’ve answered no,
perhaps it’s time to ask yourself why?
Reaction. Orange rust layers
enable my metal army to boldly stand,
serving as a visual reminder
that your body’s eroding too, and
therefore, Another Place
wordlessly urges the ghost within you
to appreciate the simplicities of life.
