Horizon by Phil Barling

My father always said

that it was only three miles

from where I stood

on the Bridlington shoreline

to where the sky meets the sea

We always kept that D i s t a n c e

Me playing Ducks & Drakes

Him out there, beyond the ozone

on the curve of time.

Looking in the morning mirror

I see him ever closer

2001 seems an age away now

and as I stand, at water’s edge

up to my knees in the brown lace of foam

The horizon gets nearer

by the day.
